Riverbend Malt House is developing alongside the craft malt community, which means that education about everything from small grain production to final products – and everything in between— is critical. We’re committed to providing resources that help our craft brewing and artisanal distilling partners craft the highest quality beers and spirits.

This is your hub for grain research and sensory information, with best practices for marketing your ingredients to boot.

Style of Beer:
Doppelbock

Riverbend Malt(s) Used:
Vienna (2 Row Barley Malt), Light Munich (2-Row Barley Malt), Dark Munich (2-Row Barley Malt)

Tasting Notes:

Crafted in collaboration with Fonta Flora Brewery and Zillacoah Beer Co., Steinbock is a Doppelbock-style lager boiled with hot granite rocks inside an open-top foeder. Heaps of toasty Vienna and Munich malts are used to create a bold, malty wort. Then a “mind-bending” amount additional of caramelization is achieved once the hot stones are added with a sensational sizzle. Cold fermentation with plus an extended lagering time helps create the perfect dark lager for winter sipping.

Style of Beer:
Double Dry-Hopped Hazy IPA

Riverbend Malt(s) Used:
Cumberland Pilsner (2 Row Barley Malt); Appalachian Wheat (Wheat Malt); Hull and Oats (Oat Malt); Great Chit (2 Row Barley Malt)

Tasting Notes:

After Hurricane Helene ravaged Western North Carolina in September 2024, DSSOLVR launched Higher Calling, a collaborative Hazy IPA project to raise funds for those affected. DSSOLVR provided a base recipe, a list of suppliers providing donated/discounted ingredients (including Riverbend!), and a label template, then invited breweries from across the country to brew the beer and donate 100% proceeds to the NC Craft Brewers Fund.

DSSOLVR chose to brew a Double Dry-Hopped version with 100% Riverbend malts. Hull and Oats provide a soft mouthfeel and Cumblerland Pilsner gives the light malt backbone for the generous amount of mosaic dry-hopping, with otes of tropical citrus, mango, and passion fruit with every sip.

When/Where Available:
While this beer is no longer available at the brewery, you can still find 4-packs to go at local craft beer and bottle shops across the region!
