Riverbend Malt House is proud to announce its milestone of 100,000 pounds of rootlets repurposed for the nearby ecosystem of local farmers.

While not usable in the malting process, Riverbend sends the remaining husks— or rootlets— from each batch of malt to nearby farms to be repurposed as animal feed.

“This process completely closes the loop in terms of sustainability,” says Riverbend Malt House CEO Scott Hickman. “Consistent with our Malt With A Mission philosophy, kindness to the environment is important. If we create waste we want to turn it into a byproduct, or reduce the amount of waste created.”

In this case, the byproduct makes for happy cows at North Carolina farms like J4 Cattle Company in Morganton. “Our herd of steer eat close to a ton of rootlets every week. The young calves enjoy it too,” says owner Robin Jackson. “This has been a great partnership all the way around.”

Rootlet repurposing is one of Riverbend’s many tactics for lessening their environmental impact, which includes the reduction of 1,064,030 of CO2 in ten years through local sourcing within 500 miles of the malthouse.

Kindred Spirits Press Release – 7.3.2020
Riverbend Malt House Announces “Kindred Spirits” Collaboration
Proceeds to benefit North Carolina’s Restaurant Workers Relief Fund

Asheville, NC – July 3rd, 2020. Riverbend Malt House today announced the release of the newly created “Kindred Spirits” collaboration IPA. The beer will be available on July 3rd and can be purchased onsite in 16-ounce 4-pack formats at retailers such as Total Wine and Tasty Beverage.
Proceeds from the sales of “Kindred Spirits” will be donated to the NC Restaurant Workers Relief Fund that was created by the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association. The fund benefits individuals and families in the food and beverage industry needing financial assistance due to the COVID-19 economic disruption.

Riverbend collaborated with Ancillary Fermentation based in Cary, North Carolina for this project. “Whit and his team have strong relationships throughout the Triangle, reflected Brent Manning, Co-Founder of Riverbend. “Those connections, along with their creative approach to recipe development, make them a great fit for this project.”

“We were looking for a project that would allow us to give back to our community and the Kindred Spirits collaboration was the perfect opportunity,” commented Whit Baker, Head Brewer and Co- owner of Ancillary Fermentation.

“Kindred Spirits” was crafted as a cross-continental style IPA, pulling in elements of both West Coast and New England styles. Riverbend contributed two types of malted oats along with their Base Camp and Vienna malts to create a slightly sweet, biscuity backbone that perfectly compliments the fruity hop character of the Citra and Nelson Sauvin hops. “We wanted to meld elements of the two prominent IPA styles to capture a large audience for this beer,” noted Manning.

Riverbend Malt House Announces “Stay True/Stay Weird” Collaboration

Proceeds to benefit New Belgium’s Bar and Restaurant Relief Fund

Asheville, NC – June 2nd, 2020. Riverbend Malt House today announced the release of the newly created “Stay True/Stay Weird” collaboration IPA. The beer will be available on June 6th and can be purchased onsite in 16-ounce 4-pack formats from any of the participating breweries, including Archetype Brewing Company, Bhramari Brewing Company, DSSOLVR Brewing Company, New Belgium Brewing Company, Twin Leaf Brewing Company, and White Labs Tap and Kitchen.

Proceeds from the sales of “Stay True / Stay Weird” will be donated to the New Belgium Bar and Restaurant Relief Fund. The fund benefits individuals and families in the food and beverage industry needing financial assistance due to the COVID-19 economic disruption.

Noting the success of the earlier “Stay Home/Stay Asheville” collaboration, which sold out in one day and contributed over $12,000 to the New Belgium relief fund, Riverbend’s Co- Founder Brent Manning built local support for a second relief collaboration. “We know that there is real economic hardship in our industry and in our community right now,” reflected Manning. “All of the folks participating in this collaboration believe that an essential part of being ‘local’ means helping out our neighbors and colleagues during tough times.”

“The outpouring of support for Stay Home/Stay Asheville was really energizing and we are excited to roll out the second round of this collaboration,” commented Steven Anan, Head Brewer and Co- owner of Archetype Brewing Company.

“Stay True/Stay Weird” is a classic, West Coast style IPA that features El Dorado, Citra, Mosaic, Cascade Cryo, and Columbus hops. The beer was brewed and packaged at Archetype Brewing Company, utilizing yeast donated by White Labs. DSSOLVR provided the can design, which features the iconic grain silo that resides in Asheville’s River Arts District.

Riverbend contributed its “Hull and Oats” malted oats along with their Base Camp and newly announced Chit malts to create a soft, biscuity malt backbone that perfectly compliments the fruity hop character and firm bitterness. “We wanted to capture that moment in the evolution of the IPA when the newer varieties of hops were co-mingling with the classics like Cascade and Columbus,” noted Manning.

Riverbend Malt House Announces Pecan Wood Smoked Wheat Malt

First in new product line of smoked malts with unique, local character

Asheville, NC – May 19th, 2020. Riverbend Malt House today announced the immediate availability of its new Pecan Wood Smoked Appalachian Wheat. This smoked malt is the first release in a series of smoked malt products which will be introduced in coming months.

Riverbend’s VP Engineering Adam Demchak designed and hand-built Riverbend’s smoker, giving Riverbend a unique capability to produce a wide range of smoked malts using various combinations of hard woods and malts. Additionally, custom smoked malts can be produced in response to the creative requirements of individual customers. Brewers will find that the new smoked products allow them to explore new flavors in beers such as Rauchbiers, while distillers can take advantage of the new and unique malt flavors in distilled products such as American Single Malt Whiskeys.

“We found that flavor options for smoked malts were extremely limited,” says Brent Manning, Founder and head of product development for Riverbend. “By offering small batch, hand smoked malts, we can customize by selecting a specific hardwood, such as wild cherry or apple wood, and then pair with one of our malts like Light Munich or Southern Select.”

“We just brewed a Smoked Helles with Riverbend’s Pecan Wood Smoked Appalachian Wheat,” says Whit Lanning, owner and brewer of Burning Blush Brewery. “I designed the beer to have a delicate smoke character. The aroma was fantastic in the brew kettle.”
